a book is a friend

Etwas, was mir im letzten Jahr definitiv gelungen ist, ist viel zu lesen. Obwohl ich nicht mehr regelmäßig pendel und keine Wartezeiten an Bahnhöfen überbrückt werden mussten, habe ich 2013 Zeit für 35 Bücher gefunden. Was bei manchen nicht wirklich schwierig war: About a Boy von Nick Hornby beispielsweise konnte ich schwerlich aus der Hand legen. 

Momentan lese ich Sweet Tooth von Ian McEwan, bin aber noch nicht weit genug, um irgendwas darüber zu sagen. 2014 liegen einige interessante Lektüren vor mir, unter anderem zwei Bücher, die ich zu Weihnachten bekommen habe: Ihr müsst bleiben, ich darf gehen von Dietmar Wischmeyer und Wer nichts weiß, muss alles glauben von den "Science Busters". Nachdem ich zu Beginn des Semesters beinahe rauschhaft englische Klassiker als Taschenbuchausgaben gekauft habe und an Secondhand- und runtergesetzten Büchern schlecht vorbeigehen kann, werde ich den Weg zur Bücherei wohl in nächster Zeit nicht antereten müssen.

I came across many good books this year. And it's not even over yet! I've read 26 until this point. Some of the highlights were:

12 incredibly good books out of 26, that's not bad at all. Some are funny (Charlotte Street), some are ernest (Macbeth, Atonement), some are informative (Pulphead, Tea Party), some are set in Britain (Charlotte Street, England, England, Macbeth, Atonement), some in the US (Winter Journal, Pulphead, Freedom, Brief Interviews with hideous Men, Mr. Vertigo, Tea Party, Chronic City, The Fourth Hand), some are innovative (England, England, Brief Interviews with hideous Men, Atonement) and some had an emotional impact on me (Charlotte Street, Winter Journal, Pulphead, Freedom, Atonement, Mr. Vertigo, Chronic City, The Fourth Hand).
(At this point I send a mental thank you to my local library which allows students to borrow books for free. I got half of the books on my highlight list there.)
Currently, I am reading NW by Zadie Smith which is pretty good so far. Afterwards I will try to work off the unread books still standing on my bookshelf (I am looking at you, Joyce and Proust). Let's see how many I can add to the current 26 until the end of the year.

Heute, um 20:15 solltet ihr unbedingt 3sat einschalten, dort läuft nämlich der britische Film "Liebeswahn". Hauptdarsteller sind Daniel Craig (ich brauche wohl keine Film-Gedankenstütze zu nennen) und Rhys Ifans ("Anonymus", "Notting Hill"). Als wenn das nicht schon toll genug wäre, ist "Liebeswahn" auch noch die Verfilmung eines Romans von Ian McEwan. Vor kurzem habe ich "Amsterdam" von ihm gelesen und es hat mir so gut gefallen, dass als nächstes sein Werk "Der Zementgarten" auf meiner Lektüreliste steht.
