</div>

alone. Especially on birthdays! It was a friend of mine's birthday
yesterday and so she wished for a plum pie, also celebrating the joyous
occasion of <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/science/2015/mar/13/pi-day-celebration-maths-fans-language-memory-contests" target="_blank">pi day</a>. You can find the recipe, which was very easy to follow, <a href="http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/7680/classic-plum-pie-with-custard" target="_blank">here</a>.
It was even easier than that for me, because I didn't make the custard
myself (why make custard if you can buy it everywhere in England?).
Also, the recipe requires you make your own custard, but the shortcrust
pastry comes out of the fridge... Anyway, here is my attempt to make the
pie:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ67IDr8RxYt32FCgb8g11hpYUlE-u9Nzf78z6FJQySocI0HG5dklbg40N7ViBROVM4pCeF90lYUrprPQEZ9WB_47UfbikdvXk9Q3GOzpCowCiesRBTo5fg9QB_QgvWQuRJxIE9VM1r_o/s1600/9.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The stoned and sliced plums in our very studenty kitchen.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiauEv5ydz8viQh_AbMplz2XaTFcQSTTrecShR3b098WmVFNC-YnWySM70uxxIpX9NyLFxdzjIUkBV9Mu4_0Eq6Mwg3hU4nGFCBAkljCvDyqLmjHw1bw12-mvPil0K7ZYjcEHIVX4shepk/s1600/8.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiauEv5ydz8viQh_AbMplz2XaTFcQSTTrecShR3b098WmVFNC-YnWySM70uxxIpX9NyLFxdzjIUkBV9Mu4_0Eq6Mwg3hU4nGFCBAkljCvDyqLmjHw1bw12-mvPil0K7ZYjcEHIVX4shepk/s1600/8.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The recipe says you should add ground cloves to the plums and the sugar, which I did - and instantly felt like Christmas in March. You could also leave out the cloves and add some cinnamon, I suppose.</div>

This time, they even had a 3 for 2 offer on the <i>Penguin Books Great Ideas</i>-edition, so I bought one book that I actually needed and two for fun.<br />

These other two, <i>The Decline of the English Murder</i> and <i>Books v. Cigarettes</i>, are by George Orwell and they consist of essays which make a very entertaining read. I am nearly done with the first one and by now, I've learned about how to get arrested, what good bad literature is and a lot about boy's weeklies. I especially liked how thoroughly Orwell analyses these cheap stories, which are set in boys' public schools. <br />
The essays are perfect after a long day of uni-reading - funny, not too challenging, but still intelligent. I will write about <i>Books v. Cigarettes</i> (which I've bought not only because of the interesting title, but also because of the appealing cover) as soon as I have read it.Lindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12255687199655519641noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8500254441774237297.post-47252871265350637492015-02-24T21:25:00.000+01:002015-02-26T20:26:28.887+01:00kafka mood<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

I have to admit that I wasn't quite fond of Franz Kafka when we had to read <i>Der
Process</i> in school. Luckily I decided to study German and met people at uni
who were very fond of his writings and I developed a slight obsession with dear
Kafka. (I have an A4 picture of him above my desk. Just saying.)<br />
Consequently, I was very happy when I found out that we were going to study <i>Der
Process</i> for one of my modules this term and really enjoyed reading the
novel again. After I've heard about Kafka genuinely laughing during readings of
his works, I really could see the comedy in the whole thing. And even though he
is sometimes portrayed almost like a tragic figure, I can't help but think of
him as someone who also enjoyed life and especially literature. While compiling
a playlist to listen to during close reading, I found this nice, quite cheerful
acoustic song by Hekla Stålstrenga, which reminds me of that:<br />

<br />
Out of interest, me and a friend also recently watched the <i>Trial</i>-film
adaptation by Orson Welles, which was good in terms of spacial representation
and relations, and Anthony Perkins is just like I would imagine Josef K., but
the end was a bit disappointing and didn't really correspond to the impression the novel makes.<br />
It is naturally beyond question that I am going to write my summative essay
in this module about Herr K. and his struggle with the law. Observed by Kafka,
listening to my Josef K.-playlist. (I wonder when I will get sick of him in the
next few weeks.

Surprisingly enough, he will bring out a new record on the 6th October this year. It will be called <i>Interlude</i> and seems to become more jazzy than its predecessors which pleases me immensly. I like about Jamie Cullum the diversity of his albums and his ability to make covers which I enjoy more than the originals. But especially the songs which are less pop and more jazz and swing are my favourites. The first single, "Don't let me be misunderstood" in cooperation with Gregory Porter already sounds very promising.<br />

Their song "When they fight, they fight" was featured in one of the episodes and I liked it immediately. Nice to sing along to, nice to dance to. "Con Law", their debut album offers even more and after searching for them on Spotifiy, I completely fell in love with "Put a light on" which appeared on the Generationals most recent album, "Heza". Somehow light-hearted, motivational, relaxed, but also with potential to shake everything out to the sound of it (and sing as loud as you like to).<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Well, not new, about 10 years old actually, but still new to me. And after I finished watching "Black Books", in which Moran plays Bernard Black, a grumpy bookshop owner who loves to read but hates to sell books, I was in desperate need of another British comedy series.<br />
Despite the strange title ("How do you want me") and the cheesy intro where in the first series Moran smiles if he is on some kind of unhealthy trip, the series is pretty amazing. It is about Ian (Dylan Moran) who moves from the city into the country to be with his newly-wed wife (Charlotte Coleman). Her family is not very excited about her choice of husband and Ian is not very excited about living in the middle of nowhere.<br />
What makes the series even better is the cast: There is not only Dylan Moran ("Run Fatboy Run") to cheer about, but also Peter Serafinowicz ("Shaun of the Dead"), Mark Heap ("Spaced") and even Marc Warren ("Hogfather") appears in a small role. This Sunday will see the last ever live show by Monty Python. You may have heard it before, because the media reported quite a bit about it - but not enough yet, in my opinion. Imagine the feeling you have when you get a present for your birthday, something you wanted for a long time. Then let's imagine that it is packed in exquisite wrapping paper and that you get it by your favourite Python, eh, person. That equals about the feeling I had when I realised that "Monty Python Live (Mostly)" is also going to be broadcast in one of the cinemas of the city where I live. <br />
And don't come at me with "Uh, they are going to play all those old sketches and nothing new" or "They're old!" or "They're only doing it for the money". Because hell yeah, that's what is going to happen - and I think it's great. They're old, they do it for the money and they are going to play sketches which are at least 40 years old. I look forward to seeing old men in women's clothes, sketches I know by heart and laughing my socks of. I can't wait for Sunday.<br />

After regularly hearing "Sheila" on my very favourite radio station XFM and never really wondering by whom the song was, I finally looked it up a few days ago. Well, it's by Jamie T. and the glorious internet also informed me that he also made "Sticks'n'Stones" which I knew as well. Aaaand, hurray hurray, after five years of absence Jamie T. will finally bring out new songs, namely "Don't you find" which premieres today at 7pm (8pm Central European Time) on XFM. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You should have a look at the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9APEZMeH0o" target="_blank">video for "Sticks'n'Stones"</a> - Jamie T.'s teeth are amazing. </div>

Und was erwartet mich da? Hier werde ich auf jeden Fall regelmäßige Kundin werden.</div><div><br></div>Lindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12255687199655519641noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8500254441774237297.post-17579287722819557732014-03-26T12:56:00.002+01:002015-02-26T20:30:27.804+01:00it's a world full of words<div style="text-align: justify;">
Fun things I did while I was absent here:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- write two seminar papers (one about the pelican as a symbol for Jesus in medieval German literature and the other one about the similarities between Georg Büchner's "Woyzeck" and Friedrich Schiller's "Verbrecher aus verlorener Ehre")</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- read literature regarding those papers</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- work</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- observe from my window how spring slowly commences</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Alright, I've also been at the beach. But it was Sunday! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now that I nearly finished the second paper, I can finally enjoy the last days of the break with reading books for fun, watching "Blacklist" and "The Americans", meeting friends I haven't seen in a long while and at last getting out into town again.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I hope, you also have some excellent free time!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<br />

</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>

And it's not even over yet! <a href="http://hatmantoene.blogspot.de/p/imaginares-bucherregal-bookshelf.html" target="_blank">I've read 26</a> until this point. Some of the highlights were:<br />
CHARLOTTE STREET by Danny Wallace<br />
ENGLAND, ENGLAND by Julian Barnes<br />
WINTER JOURNAL by Paul Auster<br />
MACBETH by Shakespeare<br />
PULPHEAD by John Jeremiah Sullivan<br />
FREEDOM by Jonathan Franzen<br />
BRIEF INTERVIEWS WITH HIDEOUS MEN by David Foster Wallace<br />
ATONEMENT by Ian McEwan<br />
MR. VERTIGO by Paul Auster<br />
TEA PARTY by German author and journalist Eva C. Schweitzer<br />
CHRONIC CITY by Jonathan Lethem<br />
and DIE VIERTE HAND (the German translation of THE FOURTH HAND) by John Irving<br />
12 incredibly good books out of 26, that's not bad at all. Some are funny (Charlotte Street), some are ernest (Macbeth, Atonement), some are informative (Pulphead, Tea Party), some are set in Britain (Charlotte Street, England, England, Macbeth, Atonement), some in the US (Winter Journal, Pulphead, Freedom, Brief Interviews with hideous Men, Mr. Vertigo, Tea Party, Chronic City, The Fourth Hand), some are innovative (England, England, Brief Interviews with hideous Men, Atonement) and some had an emotional impact on me (Charlotte Street, Winter Journal, Pulphead, Freedom, Atonement, Mr. Vertigo, Chronic City, The Fourth Hand).<br />
(At this point I send a mental thank you to my local library which allows students to borrow books for free. I got half of the books on my highlight list there.)<br />
Currently, I am reading NW by Zadie Smith which is pretty good so far. Afterwards I will try to work off the unread books still standing on my bookshelf (I am looking at you, Joyce and Proust). Let's see how many I can add to the current 26 until the end of the year. Fed by doughnuts and coffee, I am now watching the last three episodes before I have to return the DVDs to the library. <div>When I first made the acquaintance of Agent Cooper and the lovely inhabitants of TWIN PEAKS (when the series was broadcast on Arte a while ago), I found it to be quite scary. No surprise, it was created by director David Lynch, master of the strange. But after watching his movie LOST HIGHWAY, TWIN PEAKS isn't that creepy anymore. The series doesn't employ an ordinary crime story, even though it may seem so at first sight. And despite the evil spirits that haunt the town, the amiable characters (Agent Cooper, Major Briggs, Andy, Mr. Lynch himself as Gordon - just to name a few) make the series so much worth watching.</div>Lindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12255687199655519641noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8500254441774237297.post-91724350288722962272013-09-13T13:52:00.000+02:002013-09-13T13:52:28.901+02:00theaternacht rückblickVor nicht einmal einer Woche war es wieder so weit: In Hamburg fand die alljährliche Theaternacht statt, und zwar schon zum zehnten Mal.

Today's THE WORLD'S END! ...
